Universal Subwoofer Boxes - Enclosures

Universal Subwoofer enclosures or boxes come in various shapes and sizes. They will accommodate most 8", 10", 12" and 15" subwoofers. They are built with the major brand specifications in mind. If you have a subwoofer, it is more economical and sensible to purchase a factory made box then to attempt to build your own. These boxes are made from heavy duty MDF and are made to take a real beating!

There are actually three types of universal sub boxes.

Sealed box-also known as an acoustic suspension. Sealed boxes deliver tight, controlled bass-excellent Sound Quality

A sealed box is best for any music that demands tight, accurate bass. Expect flat response (not excessively boomy), deep bass extension, and excellent power handling

Ported box- also known as a vented enclosure. These boxes really bring out the LOW end sounds by releasing the rear wave of the woofer through a specially tuned port. When paired with compatible woofers, efficient ported boxes offer more boom while still preserving quality.

Some prefer the sound of ported boxes for rock, heavy metal, or any hard-driving music. Ported boxes can deliver deeper bass than sealed boxes.

Bandpass box- a special type of ported box designed for maximum slam. The woofer is mounted inside a dual-chambered box (one chamber sealed, the other ported), with the sound waves emerging from the ported side. The sound that comes out of the port is extra loud within a narrow frequency range.

Because bandpass boxes are super efficient within that range, they tend to boom. Their aggressive sound is great for rap, reggae, and hard rock.

Through the years I've heard many very expensive custom sub boxes that sounded lousy and many pre-made universal style boxes that sounded great. Don't let custom sound shops get over on you. Simply search out a size and type box recommended by your subwoofer manufacturer. Search the type first and then the size. Next consider the manufacturer's reputation. If you keep these points in mind, you can't go wrong when selecting a universal subwoofer box.
